Facilitation

About

Independent Facilitation and Support
As an independent facilitator, I operate without conflicts of interest or ties to service providers, allowing me to build supportive relationships with individuals and their families. This unique position enables me to guide them through meaningful changes free from bureaucratic constraints, empowering them to define their own needs and aspirations.

Fostering Connections and Long-Term Change
I focus on cultivating trusting relationships that help individuals strengthen their sense of self and envision possibilities for their lives, while also recognizing the importance of family ties. My approach includes engaging everyone in the change process, planning for the future, and ensuring that ongoing informal conversations guide day-to-day actions, complementing formal written plans to adapt to evolving needs.

Benefits

  • Unbiased support: As an independent facilitator, I am free from conflicts of interest or organizational ties, allowing me to provide objective guidance focused solely on the individual’s needs and preferences.
  • Empowered decision-making: I believe in the inherent capacity of people with disabilities and their loved ones to define their own needs, wants, and life goals. By actively participating in crucial decisions with meaningful support, individuals can shape their own futures.
  • Strengthened support networks: I work to cultivate trusting relationships and enhance existing family ties. Where needed, I assist in identifying and fostering enduring connections with those who care about the individual, ensuring a strong support system.
  • Comprehensive, adaptable planning: My approach involves collective contemplation of immediate and long-term needs, including “legacy” plans for when parental support is no longer available. Regular informal conversations and continuous evaluation ensure that plans remain relevant and adaptable.
  • Collaborative change: By engaging everyone in the change process, I facilitate shared learning and collaborative problem-solving. This approach ensures that complex changes are held collectively, with the individual at the center.

Testimonials

“I now understand how I need to step back, as my daughter’s voice. I want to shift my imagination from pushing her into a stage of life, to helping her find her way.”

—Navigating the Journey to Adulthood participant

“The insights I have gained are truly valuable in the sense that I now understand that the difficult questions and conversations must take place, regardless of how difficult they are.  If they feel so difficult that they keep us awake at night, sweeping them under the rug, only makes the problems worse.  By having the dedicated conversations in a safe way, we began to realize a relief, beyond our imaginations.”

—Fostering Conversations that Matter participant

“I was moved by the complex understanding of what my daughter has experienced as an individual, and how she has been put in the space of not being heard/seen/listened to, and how this has affected her ability to be empowered, experience growth, and individuate from me, as her mother.”

“Judith explains her understanding to others, in a way which, in itself, makes one 'think' differently."

“This course just opened my eyes to how easy it is for us as we go through life, putting our leisure on the side burner, because we are caught up in excuses, and that feeling of guilt for doing what we love.”

—Developing Leisure Identities participant

“I think the thing that really struck me, was being actually heard. I have to think about that some more, but the experience really is validating. It makes you almost feel more real. I felt something new.”
